Writtle is a small, charming village just outside the central Essex town of Chelmsford. Boasting the traditional village green, a duck pond, and a church built by the Normans, it is a quintessential English village and was once described as one of the loveliest in the country.
Past history points to the fact that Writtle has been inhabited for around 6,000 years, from Bronze & Iron age man through to the Romans. In the Domedsay book, published in 1086, Writtle was recorded as a town of over 1,000 people, where nearby Chelmsford had just 20 residents. The village was an important and wealthy place during the Medieval and Tudor periods, and it is claimed by some that Robert the Bruce was born there, although it was most likely to be his father. More recently, in 1922, Marconi started the worlds first regular radio broadcast from a small hut in the village, with the most famous call sign of all time, 2MT, (two-emma-toc).
Nowadays, Writtle has a population of approx. 5,600 and is home to the highly regarded Writtle College. Being located just a mile from Chelmsford town centre, it is a popular place to live with good local facilities, shops and amenities, including a local butchers, post office, library, two supermarkets, a fish & chip shop and the Writtle Wick Family Centre. Sports & Leisure is also well covered and if you like traditional sports, there is Writtle Football Club, Writtle Cricket Club, or Writtle Tennis Club. Of the less mainstream sports, there is Writtle Bowling Club, Writtle Table Tennis Club & even a Writtle Croquet Club.
Writtle is also a popular dining destination for local residents, and those from the surrounding area, who come to eat out at one of the many restaurants and pubs to found in the village. Some of the more well known include the Indian Joy Restaurant, The Blue Bridge Restaurant & Bar which offers high class haute cuisine, or traditional country pub dining at The Duck Inn at Newney Green just outside Writtle. In the centre of the village surrounding the green, you will find pubs such as The Rose & Crown, The Wheatsheaf, & the recently opened Graham's on the Greene, offering live music, entertainment and great food throughout the day. However, if you would just like a quiet cup of tea and a slice of cake, try the Writtle Tea Rooms situated in Lordship Road, opposite the entrance to Writtle College.
Apart from the village, other attractions to be found in the parish of Writtle are the beautiful setting of Hylands House & Hylands Park, which is home to the southern part of the world famous V Festival, the original site of King John's Hunting Lodge & Tithe Barn, both located at the Writtle College site, & the ancient woodland of Writtle Forest.
