Springfield, Chelmsford is a suburb of the central Essex town and is just over 3 miles square in size, and one mile from the centre. After much development over the past few decades, it has become the most populous suburb of Chelmsford with a population totaling 17,405 in the most recent survey taken in 2008.
After becoming a civil parish of Chelmsford in 1907, Springfield was classed until the 1950's as a semi-rural village with very little to attract outside visitors apart from the annual Essex Show and a few public houses. There was also the headquarters of the Essex Police and Chelmsford prison, both of which remain to this day.
Nowadays, Springfield Chelmsford is a thriving community with its own private hospital, six good quality schools covering all educational age groups, four places of worship of differing faiths, a business centre, strong cricket and football teams, pubs, restaurants, and even its own community centre. There are also a number of large supermarkets close by as well local shops including a Post Office, plus doctors and dentists to serve the growing population.
The name Springfield is also synonymous with American history after a former resident of Springfield Chelmsford, William Pynchon, became one of the leaders of the New World settlers known as the Massachusetts Bay Colony. After settling on the banks of the Connecticut River in 1636, the settlement was eventually named in honour of Pynchon's original English home. Springfield USA went on to become known as ‘The City of Firsts' due to so many innovations being discovered and invented in the town such as vulcanized rubber, the motorcycle, modern fire engines, and even the sport of Basketball.
