Chelmsford to London travel is fortunate to be served by some excellent transport links. With trains to Liverpool Street and a direct dual carriageway for road users, all parts of the capital city are easily accessible by road or rail. So if want to find out how to get from Chelmsford to London then you will find all your options below.

With it being approximately 35 miles from Chelmsford to London central, you can take your choice from either car, train or coach. All three have their own benefits and drawbacks with the cost and length of journey having to be taken into consideration.

So whether you are commuting, planning a day out, going to the theatre, or even thinking about the Olympics in 2012, you are spoilt for choice when travelling from Chelmsford to London.

By Car

If you need a direct route into the City of London, then the quickest way is to use the A12 which runs directly from Chelmsford to London. Passing Brentwood, Junction 28 of the M25, and Romford, it will take you into the heart of London's East End finishing just north of the Blackwall Tunnel.

On a good day, the journey to the London Eye for example, should take no more than around 70mins for the 35 mile trip. However, in 2007, the A12 was named as the worst road in Great Britain by an insurance company survey due mainly to the high number of commuters living in the area. This translates into a huge volume of traffic meaning the Chelmsford to London routes are always extremely busy, especially during rush hour.

All other parts of London, and the rest of the country, are easily accessible via the M25 London Orbital motorway.

By Rail from Chelmsford Train Station

Rail services to the town are provided by National Express East Anglia and operate out of London Liverpool Street. Chelmsford to London by train takes approximately 35 minutes with a single ticket costing from £12.90

Chelmsford train station is located in Duke Street, adjacent to the newly developed Chelmsford Bus Station and only a few minutes walk from the town centre. With only 114 spaces, car parking at Chelmsford station is very limited, especially when taking into account that it is the busiest completely non-terminus station outside of London.

After over 30 years, a new Chelmsford train station was finally announced for the town in 2009. Located near the Borehamwood interchange, this will be able to cater for up to 14,000 passengers a year and journeys times from Chelmsford to London by train are calculated to be around 38 minutes. Completion of the project, which is forecast to cost in excess of £45M, is due in 2015.
