School holidays in Chelmsford, love them or hate them, there's no getting away from them. If you look forward to the kids being off, or just dread the thought of it, a fact of life is that every few weeks the children will be home from either primary school or secondary school.
In general, Essex School holidays in Chelmsford last for approximately six weeks in the Summer, two weeks at both Christmas and Easter, with three, one week breaks in the middle of each known as half term. In addition there are standard UK Bank Holidays in May and August, as well as up to five teacher training days (also known as inset days or non-pupil days) when the kids do not have to attend school.
The next two Summer terms, in 2011 and 2012, will see an additional bank holiday in each year. On Friday 29th April 2011, a Bank Holiday has been declared to celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The following year is the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, and an extra Bank Holiday on 5th June 2012 has been announced. The traditional Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May has also been moved to the following week, on 4th June 2012, to create a four day weekend of nationwide celebrations.

Holidays During Term Time - Authorised Absence
In accordance with UK government guidelines, at the discretion of the Headteacher, Chelmsford schools
will only permit a child to miss their education for a family holiday due to special circumstances. Request for such absence must be presented in writing to the Headteacher giving detailed reasons and the circumstances why you wish to remove your child from school during term time.
You are advised NOT to book your holiday until permission has been granted. If permission is not granted, and you withdraw your child from school, then it will count as an unauthorised absence. You may then be liable to a penalty notice issued by the Education Welfare Service and a fine of £50, payable within 28 days. After this time the fine is increased to £100, and if not settled within 42 days, parents can be prosecuted in the Magistrates court.
Chelmsford School Emergency Closures
In times of bad weather, as seen most recently at the end of 2010, Chelmsford schools may need to close at short notice. During these periods of bad weather the best source of information is the local radio stations who regularly broadcast a list of school closures and those closing early.
If parents are in any doubt, they should contact their child's school directly using the special information telephone number which most now have set up.
