Chelmsford & District Welsh Society

Chelmsford & District Welsh Society is a very active group that was formed over 45 years ago and draws members from all over the mid-Essex area.

Membership, which currently stands at over 100, is open to anyone with Welsh origins or connections to Wales, or to anyone with an appreciation of Welsh heritage and traditions. The main language at Chelmsford & District Welsh Society meetings is English although there is always an opportunity to use or practice your Welsh.

Chelmsford & District Welsh SocietyWe have a busy year, which starts in September with a Croeso evening to welcome back members, old and new, from the summer break. At some time during the year we hold a Cymanfa Ganu and a Noson Lawen evening. Other presentations have included illustrated talks on "Garden Birds", "Walking in Wales" The History of Hylands House, "A Tribute to Ivor Novello" and the play "Under Milk Wood"

On the Friday nearest to St David's Day Chelmsford & District Welsh Society celebrate our Saint's day with a ceremonial dinner. On the following Sunday we hold a church service at the delightful little URC chapel in Little Baddow.

We organise an annual outing in May. This is usually a day visit but sometimes grows to a three-day mini break. Our recent destinations have been Bruges, Arras, Cardiff, Llandudno and Chartwell.

The highlight of our year is in June when we present a Male Voice Choir Concert. We are pleased to have brought award winning choirs and soloists from all over Wales to perform at this highly popular event in Chelmsford.

We fundraise for a different charity each year as chosen by the incoming president. Over the past 6 years we have raised over £20,000 by holding coffee mornings, garden parties and concerts amongst other fundraising activities. The concert usually features a local choir or music group but we have staged a very successful concert courtesy of the Band of the Welsh Guards.

We like to encourage the up and coming youth talent of Wales and to this end we sponsor two competitions at the National Eisteddfod. Our sponsorship is usually split between competitions for boys and girls.

We normally meet at 7.30 p.m. for 8 p.m. on the fourth Thursday of each month, September through to June, in the Cathedral Chapter House, (just behind the Cathedral in Chelmsford). Venues and times occasionally change and you are advised to check our latest newsletter or diary pages on our Chelmsford & District Welsh Society website.
