Chelmsford Courts are three in number and cover all aspects of law and order in the town as well as the county of Essex. These consist of the Chelmsford County and Family Proceedings Court based in New London Road, Chelmsford Crown Court located in New Street, and the Chelmsford Magistrates Court in the Shire Hall in Tindal Square.
All three of Chelmsford Courts cover a wide catchment area with each of them responsible for different types of legal work and cases including Criminal, Civil, Youth, Divorce, Adoption, Family, Small Claims and Bankruptcy. The courts all have modern facilities, some of which offer interview rooms, children's play area, enhanced hearing loops, baby change, and refreshments.
In addition to the three courts, Chelmsford is also home to a branch of Cafcass, (Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service). This organisation is independent of courts, social services, and all similar agencies, and provides guidance to family courts in England on the what is best for individual children in such court related matters as care & supervision, adoption and divorce cases. The Chelmsford Cafcass branch can be found at St. Mary's House in Victoria Road Chelmsford.
