Chelmsford Celebrates 20 Years of Town Twinning

Continental banners adorned Chelmsford High Street between 11 and 14 June in celebration of Chelmsford’s continuing links with its European neighbours – Backnang in South Germany and Annonay in Southern France. Chelmsford has been officially twinned with Backnang in Germany for 20 years, and with Annonay in France for 10 years. The Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Alan Arnot, and his wife Jackie were joined by the Mayor of Backnang, Dr. Frank Nopper, and the Mayor of Annonay, M. Olivier Dussport, for a special Civic Service in Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday 13 June. During the Service, reaffirmation certificates were signed by the three Mayors. The certificates confirmed the willingness of the three towns to continue to work in partnership and to further encourage the cultural, economic and personal connections between the different communities. The Mayor of Chelmsford, Alan Arnot, said: ‘We are delighted to further our existing connections with both Backnang and Annonay. The relationships have provided us with great opportunities to explore different European communities and to meet a range of interesting and inspiring people within them.’ Following the ceremony the three Mayors planted trees at Hylands House to mark the occasion.
